Dr Rachel Starr

Dr Rachel Starr is a qualitative researcher in the Psychology Department at Birkbeck, University of London who focuses on Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. She has extensive experience providing specialist IPA consultations for students conducting research within DPsych and PhD programmes.
Her PhD used IPA to explore the experiences of viewing paintings and was supervised by Professor Jonathan Smith. At Birkbeck she currently teaches IPA and supervises research projects at undergraduate and postgraduate level. She is a member of the IPA Research Group and provides small group teaching within advanced IPA workshops.
Recent work has included projects seeking to understand the everyday emotional lives of teenage girls, experiences of a specialist intervention for multiple sclerosis and past experiences of cognitive behavioural therapy. She is interested in using IPA to explore visual worlds such as those disclosed during art-viewing or captured using visual methods and also in IPA meta synthesis.
